Garden Saffron Cultivation

Soil Preparation

Soil preparation is the first step in growing saffron spice. This step is extremely important. Saffron bulbs require well-drained soil. Saffron bulbs do not like to remain in moist soil, which can lead to rotting. Therefore, we need to ensure that the soil is well-drained and contains good organic matter.

In addition to well-drained soil, saffron crocodile also needs a sunny location to thrive. These flowers love full sun but can tolerate partially shaded areas as well. So, when preparing the soil for planting, choose a spot in your garden that gets plenty of sun. Plant the bulbs about 2–3 inches (5–10 cm) deep and 3 inches (10 cm) apart, making sure the pointed ends are facing upwards.

  • Drainage: Although saffron is very resistant to waterlogging in its roots, it is recommended to plant it on raised ridges to ensure proper drainage in the field.

  • Depth: Although this varies depending on the size of the saffron bulbs, a depth of 10-15 cm is generally recommended. Large bulbs (15-20 g) benefit from deeper planting, while 10 cm may be sufficient for medium-sized bulbs.

Planting Technique

Once the soil is ready, you can plant your saffron bulbs. Planting saffron bulbs is easy if you follow the correct technique. Here's how:

  1. Saffron bulbs should be planted approximately 2-3 inches (5-10 cm) deep.
  2. If you are planting in beds, you can leave a distance of about 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm) between each bulb.
  3. If you are planting in containers, space the bulbs approximately 4 inches (10 cm) apart.

This provides enough space for each saffron bulb to grow and flower.

The tools you'll need to plant saffron bulbs include a hand-setting fork, a hoe, and a watering can. It's also very important to bury the bulbs with the pointed ends facing upwards. This ensures the bulbs grow and flower correctly. Therefore, with the right tools and technique, planting saffron bulbs can be quite easy.

Planting Time

Planting your saffron bulbs at the right time is crucial. The best time to plant saffron bulbs is between late summer and early autumn. This timing allows the bulbs enough time to establish themselves before the flowering season.

The perfect conditions for planting cold-hardy saffron bulbs are:

  • Soil temperature should be between 20 and 27 degrees C (60-70 Fahrenheit).
  • If you live in a colder region, plant the onions in a container and move them indoors before frost arrives.
  • These bulbs can withstand severe frosts as low as 14°F (-10°C). In fact, they prefer hot and dry summers.
